Vitamin E and Selenium

Vitamin E and Selenium Supplement for Horses

Vitamin E and selenium are crucial antioxidants that play vital roles in supporting a horse’s overall health, particularly in muscle function, immune response, and protecting cells from oxidative damage. However, certain regions have selenium-deficient soils, which can lead to low selenium levels in forages, while Vitamin E concentrations in hay decrease quickly after harvest. As a result, horses consuming forage from these areas may be at risk for deficiencies in both nutrients. Supplementing with Vitamin E and selenium can help ensure your horse receives the necessary antioxidants to maintain optimal health and prevent conditions like muscle weakness and poor immunity.

Vitamin E Deficiency:

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes from oxidative damage. It plays a crucial role in immune function and muscle health. Horses that are deficient in Vitamin E often display symptoms related to neuromuscular dysfunction.

Signs of Vitamin E deficiency:

Muscle weakness or atrophy

Difficulty in movement (ataxia)

Poor coordination (dysmetria)

Poor coordination (dysmetria)

Reduced immune response, making the horse more susceptible to infections

Which form of
Vitamin-E?

Vitamin E for horses comes in both natural and synthetic forms. Research shows Natural Vitamin E is up to 2.5 times more bioavailable and easier for horses to store. On labels, natural Vitamin E is listed as d-alpha tocopherol, while synthetic forms have a dl- prefix.

Selenium
Selenium deficiency is much more common than toxicity in horses. In the United States, soils naturally high in selenium are found in certain regions, particularly in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, Idaho) and parts of the Midwest (Nebraska, South Dakota).

Vitamin E and selenium offer several key benefits for horses, including antioxidant protection to combat oxidative damage, support for muscle health and function, and enhanced immune system activity. They also contribute to proper nervous system function and coordination, while helping to improve exercise tolerance and reduce muscle fatigue, ultimately promoting overall health and performance.

Natural E 5,000

Natural E 5,000 is a highly concentrated natural vitamin E pellet to be used as a daily support when higher levels of Vitamin E are indicated. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that supports a healthy immune system and helps neutralize free radicals, the damaging by-products of normal cellular activity. Natural E 5,000 provides 5,000 IU of natural vitamin E per scoop. Does not contain other vitamins or minerals so daily feeding levels can be easily adjusted to meet your horse’s individual needs without worrying about causing imbalances. It is an excellent way to help provide antioxidant protection for all ages and classes of horses. Horses without access to pasture, as well those in heavy work or under stress, should receive supplemental vitamin E.

Vitamin E + Se XL

Vitamin E+SE XL™ contains twice the level of selenium and nearly twice the level of vitamin E contained in standard selenium and vitamin E supplements. Vitamin E and Selenium are important antioxidants that work together to support a healthy immune system. While vitamin E is found naturally in fresh grass, levels begin to drop the moment grass is cut for hay. In addition, many soils are deficient in selenium, making it hard to reach the recommended daily requirement of this mineral without supplementation. Determine total selenium content in ration prior to supplementation. Powder form.

E-Se-Mag (Pellets)

E-SE-MAG™ provides targeted ingredients: Vitamin E, Selenium and Magnesium to support efficient muscle function and manage muscle discomfort associated with exercise. Supporting muscle health is essential to power peak performance and encourage normal recovery after exercise.  Determine total selenium content in ration prior to supplementation. Pellets.

Vitamin E 5,000 (Pellets)

Vitamin E 5000™ offers an easy and affordable way to meet your horse’s vitamin E needs.  Provides a highly concentrated source of Vitamin E combined with alfalfa meal (highly palatable carrier) to be used as a daily support when higher levels of Vitamin E are indicated. Formulated as an easy to feed pellet, Vitamin E 5000™ does not contain other vitamins or minerals. Horse owners can safely adjust the amount fed to support horses with high vitamin E requirements without worrying about causing imbalances. Multiple research studies have shown that vitamin E is often deficient in the diets of horses that do not have access to continual grazing on fresh green grass, or those grazing on winter pasture. Vitamin E is powerful antioxidant and works closely with selenium to protect the body from the oxidative stress. Horses are not very efficient in storing vitamin E and deficiency may be accelerated if the diet is deficient in selenium.
