How Your Horse's Stomach Works

A horse’s stomach is designed for continuous grazing, secreting 12-15 gallons of gastric juice every 24 hours to digest roughage. It also produces 5-10 gallons of saliva, which acts as a natural buffer to help protect the stomach lining, but this is mainly triggered by the consumption of fiber, like hay or grass. A horse’s stomach is small, about the size of a large football, and empties quickly, which can expose soft tissue in the upper part of the stomach (the squamous area) to damaging acid, especially without constant access to fiber and with the added stress from training or competition, increasing the risk of gastric ulcers.
